Incorrect Asian aerosols affecting the attribution and projection of regional climate change in CMIP6 models

چکیده

Abstract Anthropogenic aerosol (AA) forcing has been shown as a critical driver of climate change over Asia since the mid-20th century. Here we show that almost all Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models fail to capture observed dipole pattern optical depth (AOD) trends during 2006–2014, last decade CMIP6 historical simulation, due an opposite trend eastern China compared with observations. The incorrect AOD is attributed problematic AA emissions adopted by CMIP6. There are obvious differences in simulated regional radiative and temperature responses when using two different inventories (one CMIP6; other from Peking university, more trustworthy inventory) driving global aerosol-climate model separately. We further some widely pathways (after 2015) also significantly underestimate recent decline China. These flaws may bring about errors CMIP6-based attribution for decades projection next few decades, previously anticipated inform wide range impact analysis.

Asian aerosols: current and year 2030 distributions and implications to human health and regional climate change.

Aerosol distributions in Asia calculated over a 4-year period and constrained by satellite observations of aerosol optical depth (AOD) are presented. Vast regions in Asia that include > 80% of the population have PM2.5 concentrations that exceed on an annual basis the WHO guideline of 10 microg/m3, often by factors of 2 to 4. These high aerosol loadings also have important radiative effects, ca...

Detection and attribution of climate change: a regional perspective

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change fourth assessment report, published in 2007 came to a more confident assessment of the causes of global temperature change than previous reports and concluded that ‘it is likely that there has been significant anthropogenic warming over the past 50 years averaged over each continent except Antarctica.’ Since then, warming over Antarctica has also be...

Aerosols, Clouds, and Climate Change

Earth's climate is thought to be quite sensitive to changes in radiative fluxes that are quite small in absolute magnitude, a few watts per square meter, and in relation to these fluxes in the natural climate. Atmospheric aerosol particles exert influence on climate directly, by scattering and absorbing radiation, and indirectly by modifying the microphysical properties of clouds and in turn th...
